Appropriating the Medieval: Designs for the Contemporary Urban Moat

As reported by The New York Times, Inhabitat, Design Boom and many others, competition results for the new U.S. embassy in London have been publicly announced.

Beyond the discussion of the advanced sustainable techniques of the building and the merits of the ‘public’ landscape, it seems that the New York Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer registered the overarching cultural irony of applying world-class design skills to the emergent, institutionalized program of camouflaged security.

With this competition win and the revamped Washington Monument, the Olin Partnership is steadily developing the curious craft of the aesthetic dematerialization of intensive security operatives in post-911 urbanism.
